Our Vision

Donating organs and tissue saves lives.

In August 2012, the NSW Minister for Health launched the Increasing Organ Donation in NSW: Government Plan 2012, which implements the National Reform Agenda, with the goal to boost NSW’s donation rates.

The NSW Organ and Tissue Donation Service is the lead agency for overseeing the implementation of the Increasing Organ Donation in NSW Government Plan 2012.

The Plan aims to:

  • Increase community education and awareness campaigns to encourage people to have discussions with their families about organ donation

  • Employ specialists in hospitals to help families through the difficult decision about consenting to organ donation

  • Provide guidelines to doctors which help them uphold a person’s desire to become an organ donor

  • Promote living donation programs

Already, one of the Plan’s main objectives has been achieved following the closure of the NSW Roads and Maritime Services (formerly RTA) organ donor registry on 19 November 2012. NSW residents are now encouraged to register their decision about organ and tissue donation with the Australian Organ Donation Register. This brings NSW into line with the other states and allows for one national organ donor register. Existing donors’ details on the former RMS registry will be held by the NSWOTDS for five years.

Improving organ and tissue donation and transplantation in NSW is reliant on successful working relationships with a range of key stakeholders; these include hospital executives and senior clinicians in the NSW Health system, the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority, advocacy and community groups, but most importantly the people of NSW.

NSW has an ongoing partnership with the Commonwealth that aims to maintain and strengthen the National Reform Agenda for Organ and Tissue Donation, established in 2008. Through this collaborative approach, we aim to:

  • Increase the capability and capacity within the health system to maximise donation rates; and

  • Raise community awareness and stakeholder engagement across Australia to promote organ and tissue donation
