Message from the Minister

Jillian Skinner, Minister for Health

Organ donation is life changing and life saving.

Anyone who has had the privilege of meeting organ recipients understands their immeasurable gratitude to the person and family who made the decision to save another person’s life.  On the other side, there is a family who is suffering immeasurable loss but has made decision to save another human being’s life, leaving a lasting legacy. I have met those special people who have been touched by organ donation, by some way in their life, and that is why I am determined to increase organ and tissue donation rates in NSW.

People in NSW are dying because there is a shortage of organ donations that could save lives. NSW boasts excellence in clinical outcomes for transplantation but compared to other states in Australia, has a low donor rate.

In August 2012, I released the Increasing Organ Donation in NSW: Government Plan 2012. The plan’s objective is to increase donation rates and educate the people of NSW on donation.

It is my hope that soon, more people of NSW will decide to be an organ donor and understand the impact it can have on people’s lives.

I encourage you to discover the facts about organ donation; make an informed decision and register your decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register. However, it is always important to discuss your decision with your family and friends, who one day may be asked to donate your organs.

Organ donation is a truly amazing act of kindness when you appreciate it is the actions of a person – and their family – at a time of grief  to save someone’s life , who is most often, a complete stranger.
