Overall, the health of residents in South Eastern Sydney Local Health District has improved over the last few decades. Residents are now enjoying a much longer life expectancy and a lower mortality rate.

The health risk profile for residents of the Local Health District is generally similar to the NSW average. Notable differences include:

  • Southern sector residents are less likely to be current daily or occasional smokers (15% vs 19% NSW average)
  • Northern sector residents are more likely to be risk drinkers (38% vs 32% NSW average)
  • A slightly higher proportion of the Northern sector population (13%) and slightly lower proportion of the Southern sector population (9.0%) experiences psychological distress when compared with NSW as a whole (11%).
