Celebrating Human Experience Week

Human Experience Week (4–10 May), is a special opportunity to recognise achievements, renew our shared sense of purpose, and honour the people who make a meaningful difference to patient and staff experiences every day. In 2026, the focus was on Together in Action: Listening, Learning, Transforming.  A theme that reflects our collective commitment to listening deeply, learning from one another, and taking action to create positive change.

Across the District, Human Experience Week was marked by heartfelt celebrations that created space for self-care, kindness and wellbeing. Staff were invited to sew a beautiful heart or express what human experience means to them through creative drawing. These simple but powerful moments encouraged reflection, connection and compassion. The week also provided an opportunity to promote the 3rd Edition of The Heart of Caring Reflective Resource book, a moving collection of story excerpts from “Our People”. Featuring contributions from more than 100 health care professionals, volunteers, consumers, carers, board members and clerical staff, the book captures stories of care and compassion that beautifully reflect the theme of listening, learning and transforming. This inspiring resource is the result of the work of the District Nursing & Midwifery Practice & Workforce Unit.

When staff reflected on what human experience means to them, their words spoke powerfully of connection, care and belonging. “Connecting with others, feeling valued, and knowing we all have a part to play in creating compassionate experiences.”
