St George Hospital Kidney Disease Education Clinic proudly reaches an impressive milestone
The Kidney Disease Education Clinic (KDEC) at St George Hospital has supported kidney health for 24 years. The clinic provides end-stage kidney disease education and, where appropriate, renal replacement therapy planning. This year the clinic reached a significant milestone, treating their 1,500th patient.
Originally established in 2002 as the Pre-Dialysis Clinic, the clinic was created to provide early education and assessment for patients approaching kidney failure. The clinic supports patients and their families through education about dialysis options, nutritional support, and coordinated care.
Over the years the clinic has expanded its scope, addressing key patient concerns such as the impact of dialysis on work, finances, cultural and language barriers, and the emotional toll of treatment decisions.
Key milestones include:
- 2004 — renamed the Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic to reflect a broader approach that included conservative (non-dialysis) management, helping shift the focus away from dialysis as the sole treatment pathway.
- 2007 — introduction of a designated home kidney dialysis nurse to provide training for patients.
- 2011 — enhanced focus on quality care through key performance indicators, expanded staffing for specialised renal nursing roles, and began offering group education sessions for patients.
- 2014 — referral criteria were updated to focus on patients expected to need dialysis within a year, promoting earlier and more proactive intervention.
- 2022 — service adopts its current name.
- 2025 — clinic treats its 1,500th patient.
“Since its inception, the clinic services have grown to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to kidney disease management; emphasising education, early planning, and patient-centered care throughout the treatment journey,” said Associate Professor, George Mangos, Head of the St George and Sutherland Renal Department.
“The service exemplifies integrated kidney care by combining clinical treatment, patient education, and supportive care tailored to individual needs.”
