Information for Health Professionals on our Nerve & Muscle Clinic

The Nerve and Muscle Clinic provides care for patients with neuromuscular disorders, including peripheral neuropathy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis and motor neuron disease.

We have a Clinical Neurophysiology Fellow and Neurology Registrar that attend this clinic. 

We also have a Clinical Geneticist, Dr David Mowat, and a genetic counsellor that attend the clinic once a month.

Inclusion Criteria

We accept patients who:

  • have had or are suspected of having a neuromuscular diagnosis, eg myasthenia gravis, Motor Neuron disorders, plexopathies
  • willing and able to attend appointments
  • are over 16 years of age.

Exclusion Criteria

We do not accept patients who:

  • for non-neuromuscular related conditions, such as headache, vertigo
  • are paediatric patients under 16 years of age.

Your patient will need a referral letter to use this service. Please submit this referral electronically via Healthlink using your practice software (Best Practice, Medical Director, Genie or MedTech) or via the MyHealthLink Portal. Further information may be found at Electronic Referrals at South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.

All mandatory information must be complete. Incomplete referrals will be returned and will not be processed until all the required information has been provided.

Once we receive this referral and accept it, real time notifications will be sent to the referrer and patients who opt in regarding their referral progress.

The referral will be triaged and your patient will be placed in a waitlist for the next available appointment. When your patient's appointment has been confirmed, we will notify them by sending a letter to their home address confirming the date, time and location of their appointment.

We will also send this letter to you, the referring doctor. 

Please ensure the following tests are completed prior to your patient's initial appointment:

  • Blood tests (FBC, EUC, LFT, CMP, B12/folate, TFT, fasting glucose), if none within the last 6 months.
  • Brain/spine imaging (CT or MRI)

If you are wanting to refer an urgent patient, the general practitioner/referring doctor will need to speak to the neurologist directly to discuss the case. 

Once the referral has been triaged by the neurologists, a letter will be posted to the patient at the address listed on the referral based on the specialist's recommendation.

If there need is urgent, a member of our adminstrative team will contact your patient by phone.

If a patient misses an appointment without notice, a "Did Not Attend" letter will be posted to the patient and faxed to the referring doctor/general practitioner advising them to contact the clinic to rebook or to attend their GP to discuss alternative options should they not want to continue to attend the clinic. 

If the patient cancels in advance, a cancellation letter is posted to the patient advising of the cancellation as well as being faxed to the referring doctor/general practitoner to advise the patient has cancelled their appointment. This way the referring doctor/general practitioner can discuss with the patient whether a further appointment needs to be made and re-referral occur. 

Patients who are eligible for Medicare/DVA will be bulk billed, please bring your Medicare/DVA card with you. 

For a WorkCover or Third Party payments, the Australian Medical Association (AMA) fees generally apply. These are payable at the time of the consultation unless details of the claim and its acceptance are provided. 

Overseas visitors will need to pay the NSW Health scheduled fee, unless they are from a Reciprocal Health Care agreed country.
