BPT Hospitals

The St George-Sutherland Hospital has its base at both St George and Sutherland Hospital. Located within close proximity of each other, trainees will spend a minimum of 12 months of core training at either site.

The St George Hospital offers a coordinated Basic Physician Training program involving the following hospitals: Coffs Harbour, St George, Shoalhaven and Sutherland. All terms are accredited for Basic Physician Training with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

The two or three year program of rotations includes the following: aged care, cardiology, gastroenterology, general medicine, haematology, intensive care, neurology, nephrology, medical oncology and thoracic medicine.

As well as undertaking medical rotations at St George Hospital, successful applicants will be required to undertake medical rotations within the network at Coffs Harbour Hospital, Shoalhaven Hospital and Sutherland Hospital.

The St George Hospital and Community Health Service

The St George Hospital and Community Health Service offers a comprehensive range of inpatient and community-based health services. The hospital is an accredited principal teaching hospital of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The hospital has a designated medical trauma service and is the Medical Retrieval Service Coordination Centre for NSW. The Hospital's many areas of expertise include critical care, surgery, cancer care, medicine, women's and children's health, mental health, community health and imaging.

Coffs Harbour Health Campus

Coffs Harbour Health Campus facility is a 202-bed Base Hospital with specialists in most disciplines. Also on-site are community-based services both generalist and specialist. There is also a campus for The Rural School of Health, UNSW, with significant numbers of medical students based in Coffs Harbour for up to 12 months. The surrounding coastal areas are a peak tourist area.

Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital

Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital is located on the south coast, to the south of Wollongong. Shoalhaven Hospital is the district hospital for the Shoalhaven region. The hospital provides general surgery as well as ophthalmology, gynaecological, neonatal care, elective orthopaedic and plastic surgery along with intensive care services, emergency department and outreach services from Wollongong Hospital. Services also include oncology and renal outpatients. Shoalhaven Hospital is also linked to the area-wide rehabilitation and extended care service.

The Sutherland Hospital and Community Health Service

The Sutherland Hospital and Community Health Service is a general district hospital located approximately 30 minutes’ drive south from Sydney CBD, and serves a population of 200,000 people. The Sutherland Hospital has a strong partnership with the local community. Recognition, support and pride in the hospital and the services it provides, is widely acknowledged by the community.

 

All medical registrars are required to perform after-hours work as rostered by the hospital administration. In this capacity they will be responsible for direct patient care, the supervision of junior medical staff and communication with other senior medical staff.
