Birth Unit

The St George Hospital Birth Unit provides care to approximately 2600 mothers and babies each year. We aim to deliver a high standard of evidenced based care in a friendly and professional environment. Our philosophy of care in the Birth Unit is to normalise birth as far as is possible. A team of midwives work primarily in the Birth Unit, supported as required alongside Obstetricians, Anaesthetists and Paediatricians.  As a team we are committed to working together to respond to the needs of mothers and their babies antenatally, during childbirth and in the immediate postpartum period.

The Birth Unit is a level five centre with six single delivery rooms and one assessment room. Each delivery room has a shower and toilet. There are bean bags, birth balls and birth mats for your comfort in labour. We are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Women attend the Birth Unit for labour care and for pregnancy assessment greater than 20 weeks where there are concerns.

Contacting the Birth Unit – women are encouraged to contact the Birth Unit on the below contact number with any concerns related to the pregnancy. We are contactable 24/7 and women are advised to call before presenting in order for the team to plan care. The midwives are able to provide phone advice. Enquiries about appointments should be directed to the antenatal clinic. It is important that women carry their yellow card with them at all times.

Visiting in Birth Unit – Support is an important part at what is an important time of life. As such, visiting in Birth Unit is restricted to support people who will be present for the birth of your baby. We advise a maximum of three support people be present for you in labour.

As a Baby Friendly hospital we support and encourage breastfeeding. In the Birth Unit there is a big emphasis on skin to skin with your newborn.
