Case manager, Opioid Treatment Program

The Langton Centre

“I have up to 35 clients as a drug and alcohol case manager. I do a lot of health liaison, housing, health promotion, counselling, advocacy and whatever comes up in their lives. One of my favourite parts is doing assessments of new clients. Asking them all about their lives and what’s going on for them.  If clients have high needs, sometimes I’ll see them every day for a week, but some I only see every two or three months, with phone catch-ups in between.

One lady was referred to us from hospital after an overdose. She was in an abusive relationship, she was homeless and she was sex working to survive. We worked together really closely. Other horrible stuff happened - the violence increased, she had an unwanted pregnancy and she had another overdose. It was really intense, but she worked through it. Now she has a full time job, she’s off the program, she has housing, she’s in contact with her kids, and she’s even doing volunteer work. I love being part of those stories where people recover and reach their full potential.  I think that lady was one of our shining stars.”
