“In the community, there is possibly a lack of understanding of what pelvic disorders are. We see women with either bladder or bowel incontinence, constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and sexual pain or sexual dysfunction. We like to think that we’re not just here to help to manage the range of different complaints, but to help to empower women to self-manage as well. We like to think we’re an advocate in our patient’s corner to improve their participation in life and daily activities.
I saw a woman who’d had children and all she wanted was to be able to run. When I first saw her, she couldn’t walk the coastal walk between Coogee and Bondi without being severely wet. She was really struggling and through a process of coming through our new screening clinic, she was able to access specific physiotherapy which identified exactly what it was that was contributing to her symptoms and we were able to get on top of it quite quickly, so she ran the City to Surf.
Working in women’s health is a real privilege. It’s incredibly rewarding to feel the sense of a women improving her quality of life.”
