A new chapter for a vital service

Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Services was delighted to welcome NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant, as well as a former client and other special guests, to open the newly expanded Stanford House in the heart of Darlinghurst.

Since 1991, Stanford House has provided supported accommodation to people living with HIV who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. The service delivers intensive case management and empowers clients to transition to independent living.

Supported by the District’s Adahps team, SESLHD has recently assumed oversight of Stanford House, which is based at St Vincent’s Campus and managed operationally by the Haymarket Foundation.

Together with the Ministry of Health, SESLHD has secured additional beds for Stanford House, so more people can benefit from this crucial service.

Speaking at last week’s opening, Dr Kerry Chant described supported accommodation such as Stanford House as a key aspect of NSW’s world-leading HIV response.

“Stanford House is a powerful example of what can be achieved when services, including NGOs and NSW Health organisations, work together to support vulnerable clients living with HIV. It is important that this collaboration continues well into the future,” Dr Chant said.

“I want to thank South Eastern Sydney Local Health District for their oversight and support.”

Attendees were privileged to hear a deeply moving personal account from Jonathan, a former client who has benefited from his time at Stanford House.

Jonathan’s story underlines his incredible resilience, and the importance of listening to those with lived experience and embedding their voices into the care we provide.
