District represented at NSW Health Tuberculosis Conference

On Friday 2 May, Tuberculosis (TB) clinicians and public health staff from across NSW gathered for the state’s premier Tuberculosis conference. This annual event, hosted by the NSW TB Program, brings together clinical experts and researchers to explore the latest developments in TB prevention, treatment and control.

SESLHD was proudly represented by the St George Chest Clinic team, who attended the day to strengthen their knowledge, share experiences, and build relationships with other services across the state. Their presence reinforced the District’s ongoing commitment to delivering best-practice TB care and remaining at the forefront of evolving clinical practice.

A highlight was the presentation by SESLHD’s Dr Vicky Chang, Respiratory Physician, who shared findings from her PhD thesis. Dr Chang’s research on latent TB infection challenges conventional approaches and outlines a bold path forward. Her work aims to guide future strategies by focusing on expanding community-wide preventive therapy, refining high-risk population testing, advancing diagnostics, and developing new treatment regimens.

The day also covered cutting-edge topics including TB vaccine development, the role of artificial intelligence in TB control and post-TB lung disease rehabilitation. Attendees came away with fresh insights into contemporary challenges and solutions for managing TB more effectively.

“Having the full team present allowed alignment with state-level strategies, strengthened support for Dr Chang’s contribution to TB research, and inspired new ideas through meaningful collaboration,” said Joshua Banner, Nursing Unit Manager Medicine & Cancer Services Respiratory Medicine, St George Hospital.

“It was an energising opportunity to connect with peers, reinforce SESLHD’s leadership in TB care and bring back knowledge that will directly benefit patients and communities.”
