The healing power of art

We all know that art can increase our well-being in many ways – from promoting healing to reducing stress. A new mural at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service at Randwick, painted by students at The Bowen College Maroubra, aims to do just that.

The colorful, hand painted mural, which will be on display on the exterior wall of the service facing Avoca Street, as well as being featured in the waiting area and hall, will create a welcoming atmosphere for youngsters attending the service.

The Bowen College Maroubra is an alternative option to mainstream education provided by Youth Off The Streets.

Some of the young people who painted the mural, which depicts a whale and other significant Indigenous objects, attend both services. First Nations education artists acted as consultants during the two-month project.

Yasmin Schubach, the Project Officer from Youth off the Streets, said she hopes the mural, called Sharing Our Story, creates an uplifting atmosphere that would give visitors “a sense of hope” and “a feeling of community.”
