The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy

This NAIDOC Week, we come together to celebrate the strength, legacy and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, custodians of the world’s oldest continuing cultures.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, honours young Aboriginal leaders, the power of Community, and the legacy left by ancestors.

NAIDOC Week festivities have brought plenty of colour to our sites – an opportunity to yarn, reflect, celebrate and listen.

“Without a doubt, NAIDOC Week is my favourite time of year,” says Skye Parsons, a proud Yuin woman and Director of Aboriginal Health.

“It’s a time to come together, connect, and experience all that our culture has to offer.”

“It’s a great opportunity to learn about the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to listen to our voices and hear our stories.”

“As we celebrate the next generation this NAIDOC Week, I am proud of the fearless young leaders in our District and Community, who are guided by Mob and the wisdom of our Elders.”

This year’s NAIDOC Week holds special significance as the 50th anniversary of the NAIDOC movement which began, and continues to be, a movement for rights and recognition.

At NAIDOC events across the District, staff have been fortunate to be welcomed to Country by traditional custodians, to hear from respected Elders, and experience local culture – through Smoking Ceremonies, traditional dance, yarning and storytelling.

At the heart of NAIDOC Week for SELSHD is our commitment to closing the gap and providing cultural safety to Mob. You can learn more about our commitment to health equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Healthy Mob, Strong Community: SESLHD Aboriginal Health Plan 2024-2026.
