SESLHD welcomes 106 new intern doctors
SESLHD has welcomed 104 new doctors across St George, Sutherland and Prince of Wales hospitals and a further two at Calvary Healthcare Sydney.
Dr Jo Karnaghan, Director of Medical Services, SESLHD, said interns are a vital part of the professional team at the frontline of the health system.
“We are very happy to greet this new team of enthusiastic and talented doctors who want to make a difference and develop their skills in our district,” Dr Karnaghan said.
St George Hospital have 43 new doctors starting this month, with Prince of Wales Hospital starting 37, Sutherland Hospital - 24, and Calvary Healthcare Sydney, two.
The interns have just completed their orientation workshops which covered a number of areas including ward etiquette, infection control, patient safety, admissions and discharges, as well as a series of presentations across hospital departments.
During their one-year internship the graduates will complete compulsory terms in the specialties of medicine, surgery and emergency medicine as required by the Medical Board of Australia and will rotate through a network of metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals.
Local MPs visited SESLHD health care facilities to welcome the medical interns. They took the opportunity to chat with the new doctors at informal lunches and morning teas, and observe them honing their skills in practice sessions.
At Prince of Wales Hospital, Bruce Notley-Smith MP, Member for Coogee, welcomed the new interns and watched them take part in medical training.
Mark Coure MP, Member for Oatley, welcomed St George and Sutherland Hospital interns at the Research and Education Centre, where he met six new doctors who were returning to work at the facility where they were born.
“Across the State there are 1021 intern positions - up from 999 last year - meaning NSW has more intern positions than any other state or territory and up 251 positions – or 32 per cent – since 2011,” Dr Karnaghan said.
“The NSW Government invests around $107 million on our internship program each year.”
