Strengthening LGBTIQ+ inclusion in maternity and child and family health nursing

Access to safe and inclusive healthcare is essential for all. However, LGBTIQ+ individuals often face stigma and discrimination that hinders their access to care.

The transition to parenting and the first years of a child’s life can be a challenging and stressful time for any family. It is crucial LGBTIQ+ families feel safe and supported to access healthcare, particularly during the first 2000 days of a child’s life.

To ensure we meet the needs of LGBTIQ+ families, the District undertook a LGBTIQ+ Pathways to Parenthood and Beyond Project in collaboration with key LGBTIQ+ organisations and consumers.

Through the project, three key factors were identified that help LGBTIQ+ families to feel safe in accessing care:

  • kind and respectful staff
  • visible LGBTIQ+ inclusion
  • staff knowledge and language.

Building on these findings, 30 recommendations were developed to enhance inclusion within maternity and child and family health services across the District. These recommendations focus on building staff knowledge and confidence; increasing visible signs of inclusion; and promoting active inclusion.

A Family Diversity Value Statement has been developed to reflect the District's commitment to inclusive practices that celebrate and support LGBTIQ+ families:

We acknowledge that families take many diverse forms,
and we honour the unique journey of each family.

We are committed to ensuring all families feel welcome,
respected, and empowered in our care.

Michelle Jubelin, Director Child Youth and Family Services, says the project has been essential for creating more inclusive healthcare environments.

“Reducing barriers to access is a vital step toward ensuring all families feel respected, supported, and included in services. We’re equipping staff with resources for inclusive practice and enhancing services in maternity and child and family health nursing. This will significantly improve healthcare experiences for LGBTIQ+ families.”
