Uterine transplant extraordinaire takes home prestigious award

Internationally renowned in the field of paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, Dr Rebecca Deans is a woman of substance.

Dr Deans has made dramatic advancements in her area of expertise that are nothing short of life-changing for young women. So, it was no surprise that she was named the NSW Woman of Excellence in the 2023 NSW Women of the Year Awards.

The awards recognise remarkable women who have made significant contributions to NSW.

“I feel so honoured to receive this award,” Dr Deans said. “There were so many outstanding candidates.”

Earlier this year, Dr Deans and her team performed the first Australian uterine transplant at the Royal Hospital for Women as part of a cutting-edge research trial.

The trial involved more than 20 multidisciplinary staff who were able to turn 25 years of collaborative research into a hopeful future for one woman, and hopefully many more.

When Dr Deans isn’t in the operating theatre or on the ward or she is educating and empowering the next generation of female clinicians.

“The young women I train are strong, they don’t take ‘no’ for an answer and are prepared to stand up for what’s important to them,” Dr Deans said. “They are truly inspiring.”
