Welcoming our international nurses and midwives

Across our wards and services, you will find a talented and dedicated cohort of nurses and midwives who come from all over the world.

Adding to the current nurses and midwives from diverse backgrounds, the SESLHD Nursing and Midwifery Directorate run international recruitment campaigns to attract skilled nurses and midwives to the District.

“Two hundred nurses and midwives have been recruited in the last two years from these campaigns,” said Roisin Murphy (pictured far right), Nurse Manager, SESLHD Nursing and Midwifery Workforce Capacity and Capability.

Two of the international recruits are Barrack Ongili (pictured left), of Kenyan descent, and Swathy Sujatha Kumar (pictured centre), originally from India.

“I trained in Kenya. It was a dream of mine to come to Australia for a very long time,” said Barrack, who arrived in June 2024 and is a registered nurse at The Sutherland Hospital.

“I made up my mind to come to Australia because of the work life balance, the structured career progression and the weather.”

“After my education and graduation, I worked in India for four years and then I moved to Dubai, and from Dubai I moved to the UK, and finally I’m here in Australia,” said Swathy, who is celebrating her first year working at Prince of Wales Hospital.

“As the primary SESLHD contact for the candidates, I like to hear they’ve really settled, they’re happy, the kids have settled in and their partner has a job. I’ve lived this myself, so I know what it’s like,” said Roisin.
