Celebrating 130 years
This year, St George Hospital celebrates 130 years of operation, caring for the local community and patients in Southeastern Sydney since 1894.
From early beginnings opening as a ‘Cottage Hospital’, St George has evolved into a comprehensive hospital and health service, offering the highest level of care to the most vulnerable in our community.
Core to our work is the motto ‘Tu souffres cela suffit’, meaning ‘You are suffering, that is enough’, words of the French microbiologist Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).
The core pillars that have shaped the richness of our history and the evolution of our service include our patients, our place, our people and our future.
Our patients and local community have grown in their uniqueness and diversity and we continue to partner with them to listen, learn and shape our future delivery of care.
We are proud of our place and its evolution from the small ‘Cottage Hospital’ to an A1 trauma service with state-of-the-art facilities. Our future is bright with the Stage 3 redevelopment due for completion at the end of 2026, a proof of our resilience, strength and journey towards exceptional care and healthier lives.
Most importantly, we are proud of the people who stand at the heart of what we do; a diligent community of clinicians, nurses, allied health staff, administration and support staff who make a daily commitment to improving the lives of our patients. They make an important impact and are core to our delivery of world class care.
We are proud of our strength, resilience and rich history marked by dedication and a selfless commitment to making a difference.
St George Hospital looks forward to celebrating throughout the upcoming year, as we reflect on our past and look forward towards the future.
St George Hospital first opened its doors on 16 November 1894.
