Emergency Physician Training

St George Hospital is a major teaching hospital associated with the University of New South Wales (UNSW). It is the Level 1 Trauma Centre for the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and is one of the leading hospitals for trauma & emergency management in the state. It is currently undergoing redevelopment with the new eight storey Acute Services Building. It includes a new intensive care department, eight new operating theatres, 128 new inpatient beds, two cardiac catheter laboratories and a new roof top helipad.

The Emergency Department relocated to a new purpose built department on the ground floor of the Acute Services Building in 2014. It incorporates a dedicated Paediatric unit, a 10-bed short stay Emergency Medicine Unit and in department radiology and CT facilities. It is one of the busiest Emegency Departments in NSW, seeing upward of 80,000 patients each year.

The Department has full accreditation by ACEM for Emergency medicine training. The Emergency Department is staffed by a dedicated consultant team providing 16 hour on site cover, 7 days a week.

There is an extensive training program in place which includes:

  • 4 hours weekly protected teaching time
  • Primary and Fellowship preparation with access to ACEM examiners
  • An education support package for registrars.

St George trainees have an outstanding track record in both primary and fellowship examinations. There is a well-established research program in place with an appointed FACEM Director of Research assisting our trainees in producing high quality research for presentations at scientific meetings and publications.

The ED Registrar position offers rotations in Paediatrics, Anaesthetics, ICU, Medicine, Trauma, Surgery and other emergency departments.

St George is located in the suburb of Kogarah which is only 14kms south of the Sydney CBD. It is easily accessible via buses, trains and major roads.
