A new Supportive and Palliative Care Clinic has been established at Sutherland Hospital, to support patients and families facing life-limiting illness such as advanced cancer, heart, respiratory, kidney or neurological diseases including dementia. The clinic joins the St George Hospital Supportive and Palliative Care clinic which opened in February 2023.

Supportive and Palliative Care is available at any stage of a life-limiting illness and focuses on a person’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual health to enhance their comfort and wellbeing.

The goals of the clinic are to:

  • Improve a person’s quality of life in advanced illness where cure is no longer possible
  • Seek to understand what matters most to the person and their family to ensure goals of care align with their wishes and values

Members of the Supportive and Palliative Care clinic team include Palliative Care Doctors and Nurse specialists, Allied Health professionals and administration staff. The team work closely with the patient’s treating doctor and appropriate members of the Allied Health team to improve symptoms and quality of life, while managing the illness.
