Peer Education and Youth Advisory Committee

(PEYAC)

The PEYAC project employs a diverse group of young people aged 15 - 24 as peer educators and youth advisors in the SESLHD community. The project is led by the Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Services (SHBBV) Projects team and supported by the Kirketon Road Centre and Equity and Prevention’s Youth Health Program.

Our peers receive extensive training on harm reduction, sexual health, consent & healthy relationships, blood borne viruses, and alcohol and other drugs, including vaping. Together, we work to develop engaging and informative activities made for young people, by young people

Our peers deliver health information and health promotion activities to engage young people in our community. Peers also gain experience supporting events, facilitating trainings and conducting weekly outreach shifts. The committee also provides a youth advisory function within the District, supporting health services to enhance youth friendliness across their resources and engagement with young people.

“It feels meaningful and important to contribute to making systematic changes for other young people.”
Jo
"It’s not someone older telling you not to vape … you are so much more likely to listen to someone your own age."
Tara
"Talking to young people gives a fresh perspective. The service providers are trying to reach young people like us, so our ideas are so important."
Lizzie
