We care for you while you stay in our hospital if you have cancer or blood disorders. These include:
- Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin Lymphomas
- Leukaemias – acute and chronic
- Multiple myeloma and other plasma cell disorders
- Myeloproliferative disorders such as polycythemia rubra vera and essential thrombocythaemia
- Myelodysplastic syndromes
- Anaemias
- Thalassemia, sickle cell diseases, and other haemoglobinopathies
- Venous thrombosis such as DVT, Pulmonary Emboli and other clots
- Bleeding disorders such as Haemophilia, von Willebrand’s disease, platelet disorders
- Iron deficiency anaemia, and iron-loading syndromes
- Blood count abnormalities
- Breast cancer
- Gastrointestinal cancer (stomach, bowel, liver, pancreas, bile duct)
- Prostate, bladder or kidney cancer
- Lung cancer
- Skin cancer (melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma)
- Brain cancer
- Soft tissue sarcoma

We are a team of specialised doctors and nurses available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We also have social workers, physiotherapists, dieticians and psychologists available Monday to Fridays.
We can provide:
- Chemotherapy - when we give you medicines that destroy cancer cells
- Autologous stem cell transplantation - transplant of your own stem cells
- Immunotherapy - treatment that helps your bodies immune system fight cancer
- Hormonal therapy - uses synthetic hormones to block your bodies natural hormones when they are causing cancer
- Targeted therapy - medicines that work on specific features of cancer cells to stop them growing.
Our nurses work three different shifts - morning, afternoon, and night. Our medical and allied health teamwork from 8:30am to the afternoon. Our healthcare team meets together to discuss your care 5 days a week at 8:45am.
Our nurses will take your blood pressure, temperature and heart rate, and complete other assessments while you are here every 4 hours. This may need to be done more frequently.
Meals are delivered from 7:30am, 12:30pm and 5:30pm. Please let the staff know if you have any specific allergies and dietary requirements.
Our usual visiting hours are from 10.00 am - 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm to 8.00 pm.
Quiet hours are from 8.00 pm - 8.00 am and 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm.
Our ward may have different visiting times (flexibility) or special requirements, please discuss with our Nurse Unit Manager.
We are a teaching hospital and student doctors or nurses may be involved and supervised by senior staff during your visit. You have the right to say no. If you do so, this will no impact in any way on the services we will provide.
Please let us know if you need an interpreter. You can contact us from outside the hospital by telephoning the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450. Palliative Supportive Multidisciplinary Clinic
How we can help you
Our clinic can help you if you are living in the community with a life-limiting or terminal illness. The clinic aims to bring together the health care team with all their specialties to help you and your family so you are as comfortable as possible and have the best quality of life you can.
We can help with:
- managing your pain or symptoms
- your nutrition
- swallowing and communication
- mobility
- referrals to counsellors or spiritual/pastoral care.

Our clinic is held on Tuesdays from 9.00 am - 2.00 pm at the Professorial Suite, Level 2, Campus Centre Building, Prince of Wales Hospital. Phone Number is 9382 0400.
You will first see Dr Rebecca Strut, our palliative care specialist doctor. You will also see other health professionals from our team.
You will need a referral letter from your local general practitioner (GP) or specialty doctor to use this service. Your doctor will need to submit this referral electronically via Healthlink. Your referral will include your medical history, relevant test results, X-ray results and what medicines you are currently taking.
Once we receive this referral and accept it we will send you a letter with your appointment details. We will also send this to your doctor. If we cannot make an appointment for you, we will send you a letter confirming that you are on the waiting list for the next available appointment. If you change your address and/or phone number, please call 02 9382 0400.
If you need to change or cancel your appointment or no longer require an appointment/be on the waitlist, please call 02 9382 0400.
Please make sure you bring:
- Your referral lettter
- Current Medicare or Veterans Affairs card
- Any Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card
- Recent X-rays or medical images and their reports
- Activities to keep you entertained while waiting, e.g. book, music player, crosswords.
When you come to our hospital for your appointment, you can check-in using our electronic check-in kiosks. These are located in our Adult Outpatient Department, Acute Services Building (Botany Street), High Street and Barker Street entrances.
