The Sydney Youth Cancer Service is a specialist treatment and support service for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer aged between 15 - 25 years, and their families.

Our service supports young people by providing:

  • medical expertise in AYA cancers
  • specialist nursing and care coordination
  • psychosocial assessment to support physical, social and emotional wellbeing
  • fertility preservation and sexual health services
  • education and work support
  • access to clinical trials and research
  • cancer information for family, friends, schools and workplaces.

Where is your care delivered

The Sydney Youth Cancer Service is run by Prince of Wales Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. Our team supports young people aged 15-25 years at both hospitals.  

The You Can Centre is a dedicated space for young people located at the Cancer Survivorship Centre, Prince of Wales Hospital. Some psychosocial sessions are held in the You Can Centre.

GPs and/or treating hospitals can refer to the Sydney Youth Cancer Service. Referrals are accepted from across NSW and the ACT. Please send relevant test results with the referral letter.

Contact the Clinical Nurse Consultant on 0400 474 691 for more information.

Once the referral is received, a letter will be sent confirming an appointment date, time and location. To change or cancel an appointment, contact cancer services on (02) 9382 5111.

Please bring:

  • Medicare card, any health care or concession cards
  • Private Health Fund Membership card (if insured)
  • Recent X-rays or medical images and their reports, if the doctor has requested them

Do you need help understanding or speaking English? Ask our team to arrange an interpreter. This is a free service. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Service Type

We are a team of specialised doctors and nurses available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We also have social workers, physiotherapists, dieticians and psychologists available Monday to Fridays.  

We can provide:

  • Chemotherapy - when we give you medicines that destroy cancer cells
  • Autologous stem cell transplantation - transplant of your own stem cells
  • Immunotherapy - treatment that helps your bodies immune system fight cancer
  • Hormonal therapy - uses synthetic hormones to block your bodies natural hormones when they are causing cancer
  • Targeted therapy - medicines that work on specific features of cancer cells to stop them growing.

Our nurses work three different shifts - morning, afternoon, and night. Our medical and allied health teamwork from 8:30am to the afternoon. Our healthcare team meets together to discuss your care 5 days a week at 8:45am.

Our nurses will take your blood pressure, temperature and heart rate, and complete other assessments while you are here every 4 hours. This may need to be done more frequently.

Meals are delivered from 7:30am, 12:30pm and 5:30pm. Please let the staff know if you have any specific allergies and dietary requirements.

Our usual visiting hours are from 10.00 am - 1.00 pm and 3.00 pm to 8.00 pm. 

Quiet hours are from 8.00 pm - 8.00 am and 1.00 pm - 3.00 pm. 

Our ward may have different visiting times (flexibility) or special requirements, please discuss with our Nurse Unit Manager.

We are a teaching hospital and student doctors or nurses may be involved and supervised by senior staff during your visit. You have the right to say no. If you do so, this will no impact in any way on the services we will provide.

Please let us know if you need an interpreter. You can contact us from outside the hospital by telephoning the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) on 131 450. Tell the operator what language you speak and then ask the interpreter to set up a telephone conversation between you, an interpreter, and the healthcare professional you want to speak with.

Any patient experiencing hair loss because of their treatment can hire a wig from the wig library. There are a wide range of wigs in contemporary colours and styles as well as head coverings, hats, turbans, scarves and head wraps.

This service is open to all patients across NSW and managed by the Prince of Wales Hospital Volunteer Service.

Our experienced volunteers will assist you with the selection, fitting and care fo your wig. They can also help with head shaving if required.

We provide a diagnostic and genetic counselling service for adults and children who have, or are at high risk of hereditary cancers and tumours. We also see some people who have or are at high risk of a hereditary endocrine tumour. We will discuss your risk of cancer and whether genetic testing is helpful for your health care.

If you are concerned about your own diagnosis of cancer or your family history, speak to your doctor for a referral to the Hereditary Cancer Centre.

Please ask your doctor to send us your referral letter. We will also ask you to complete a registration form. You can do this now by completing this and sending it in with your referral. Otherwise, our administration staff will contact you to complete this with you.

Once we have received your referral, a member of our staff will contact you to make your appointment.

If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please call us on 02 9382 5107.

You will be asked about your personal medical history and your family history of cancer. Our staff will assess your risk and whether genetic testing could help your family. We also give advice about screening and ways to reduce cancer risk.

If you are an Australian Medicare or Veteran Affairs card holder, your appointment will be bulk billed.

  • Current Medicare card or Veteran Affairs card
  • Any Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card
  • Insurer details (eg workers compensation, public liability or third party)
  • Your private health fund membership card if you are currently insured with a private health fund
  • Recent X-rays or medical images and their reports, if applicable
  • Activities to keep you entertained while waiting (for example, a book, music player with headphones, crosswords). There is also a television and magazines available in the waiting area.

Palliative Care

How we can help you

Palliative care looks after people who are living with a life-limiting illness or one that cannot be treated and will lead to their death (called a terminal illness).

Palliative care can improve your symptoms and help you achieve the best possible quality of life through your illness. We aim to prevent and relieve suffering by treating your pain and other problems, whether they are physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Our team can also help your family members to manage at this time. 

Our services

Inpatient consultations - visiting you in hospital

We visit you when you are an inpatient in a ward at Prince of Wales Hospital. We provide specialist advice to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life. We can also help you arrange to get home and have palliative care in your home.

Community service - visiting you in your home

We visit you in your home to help you manage your symptoms, care for you at the end of your life and support you and your family with your loss and grief. We can help you with arrangements if you wish to die in your home. Our nurses, doctors and allied health professionals can visit you. We also can lend you equipment.

We can visit you 7 days a week between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm. You can also call us via the hospital switchboard outside these hours on (02) 9382 2222. 

Residential aged care facilities 

Our specialised Nurse Practitioner can visit you if you live in a nursing home in our hospital's catchment area. This service is available Monday to Friday and your family doctor (GP) can access specialist advice over the telephone at weekends.

Outpatient clinic appointments at our hospital

We have two services which involve you coming to our hospital for outpatient clinic appointments:

Palliative Supportive Multidisciplinary Clinic This clinic is for people who have a life-threatening illness, non-malignant illness or neurodisability and are in the last 12 - 24 months of their life. You will be reviewed by a team of specialist health professionals including your GP, medical specialists, nurses and allied health professionals. We can also arrange telehealth and home visits. Our palliative care team includes:

  • Occupational therapists 
  • Physiotherapists
  • Pharmacists
  • Speech Pathologists
  • Social workers
  • Dieticians
  • Clinical psychologists.

We also work with your family, Medical Specialist and family doctor (GP).

If you live in our hospitals catchment area and have a life-limiting illness such as cancer, emphysema or heart disease you may be referred by your local family doctor (GP) or a medical specialist to use our services. Ask your doctor to make an electronic referral for you. 

We will send you an appointment letter in the mail, confirming the date and time and where you should go for your appointment.

If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please call us on 9382 5111.

  • Current Medicare card or Veteran Affairs card
  • Any Health Care Card, Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card.
  • Your Private Health Fund Membership card if you are currently insured with a private health fund.
  • A list of your current medications.
  • Recent X-rays or medical images and their reports, if applicable.
  • Activities to keep you entertained while waiting (for example, a book, music player with headphones, crosswords).

Please let us know if you need an interpreter. You can contact us by telephoning the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National on 131 450. Tell the operator what language you speak and then ask the interpreter to set up a telephone conversation between you, an interpreter, and the healthcare professional you want to speak with.

We are a teaching hospital, and you may be asked to be involved in research or for a student to be present at your appointment. You have a right to say no, and this will not impact on the services we provide.

How we can help you

Palliative care looks after people who are living with a life-limiting illness or one that cannot be treated and will lead to their death (called a terminal illness).

Palliative care can improve your symptoms and help you achieve the best possible quality of life through your illness. We aim to prevent and relieve suffering by treating your pain and other problems, whether they are physical, psychosocial and spiritual. Our team can also help your family members to manage at this time. 

Our services

Inpatient consultations - visiting you in hospital

We visit you when you are an inpatient in a ward at Prince of Wales Hospital. We provide specialist advice to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life. We can also help you arrange to get home and have palliative care in your home.

Community service - visiting you in your home

We visit you in your home to help you manage your symptoms, care for you at the end of your life and support you and your family with your loss and grief. We can help you with arrangements if you wish to die in your home. Our nurses, doctors and allied health professionals can visit you. We also can lend you equipment.

We can visit you 7 days a week between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm. You can also call us via the hospital switchboard outside these hours on (02) 9382 2222. 

Residential aged care facilities 

Our specialised Nurse Practitioner can visit you if you live in a nursing home in our hospital's catchment area. This service is available Monday to Friday and your family doctor (GP) can access specialist advice over the telephone at weekends.
