They work closely with doctors and are responsible for analysing anatomical structures during the ultrasound examination to obtain detailed diagnostic images for reporting.

Sonologists, Radiologists and Obstetrician/Gynaecologists who will look at the images produced to diagnose and produce a report for your requesting practitioner. They also perform a range of ultrasound guided procedures.

To make an ultrasound appointment, we need a copy your referral. These can be faxed to (02) 9382 6706, emailed to seslhd-rhwus@health.nsw.gov.au or delivered in person.

All patients seen in the ultrasound department must be patients of a clinic of The Royal and be referred by a doctor at The Royal. GP referrals may be accepted, however, not guaranteed due to high acuity of clinic, emergency and inpatient work.

Once a referral is received, it will be prioritised based on clinical urgency by one of our sonographers or admin staff and an appointment will be scheduled. Please ensure your mobile phone number is provided as an SMS will be sent to you when appointment is made and a reminder sent 3 days prior to your appointment. Please confirm if you plan on attending appointment or call us if you need to cancel or reschedule.

Waiting times and appointment allocation depend on what type of scan or procedure you are having and why. Some scans need to be booked at a specific time in your pregnancy or menstrual cycle. Our team will prioritise each request based on clinical urgency.

We are a teaching hospital and you may be asked to be involved in research, or for a student to be present at your appointment. You have the right to decline. If you do so, this will not impact in any way on the services we will provide.

This service is covered by Medicare. If you are not eligible for Medicare, or Reciprocal Agreement, you will be charged an upfront amount. Details will be discussed with you prior to your scan.

The turnaround for reports completed by our specialist doctors, occur within 24 hours during the week and these will automatically be sent electronically to your referring doctor.

The Royal Hospital for Women is a stand alone women's hospital that recruits registered nurses and midwives.

The tertiary referral hospital offers opportunities for registered nurses to work in gynaecology and gynae-oncology, operating suite, neonatal intensive care, an attached breast cancer clinic, fertility clinic and day surgery.

Registered midwives have the chance to work in all areas of midwifery through various models of care including continuity of care models, high risk maternity, aboriginal infant and maternal health and the newborn intensive care unit.  There are eight midwifery group practices providing continuity of midwifery care for approximately half of all women who book to give birth at the hospital.

The Hospital has a very high standard of midwifery care and provides undergraduate and postgraduate midwifery education programs and offers staff the opportunity to further their education and access professional development as well as the support of nursing and midwifery education support staff.

Registered nurses and midwives also have access to a new graduate program to develop skills in newborn care, the high risk dependency unit and Midwifery Group Practice.

Each year the RHW (through the MOH Health MIDSTART recruitment portal) offers a number of positions to post graduate nurses to undertake a 12-month student midwifery program. These MIDSTART students are employed for the 12-month study program. Students enrolled in a Bachelor of Midwifery program are offered placements where possible in midwifery group practices during their education. Most students are offered a placement at the Hospital on completion.
