Colposcopy Service
The Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) Colposcopy Service provides diagnosis, follow-up, and treatment for pre-invasive conditions affecting the cervix, vagina, and/or vulva.
These can include:
- Colposcopy
- Vulvoscopy
- LLETZ procedure
- Laser to vulva
What is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is the examination of the cervix using a colposcope. The procedure is not usually painful, but may be slightly uncomfortable, similar to having a pap smear. We may also take a biopsy (small piece of tissue) from the cervix or vagina.
You may experience some bleeding or discharge particularly if you have had a biopsy. You will be advised about after care by our medical team.

- This service is for South-Eastern Sydney residents (postcodes 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017 to 2036)
- We also accept some referrals from other tertiary services who require specialist care
All patients attending the Colposcopy Service require a valid GP referral before we can book you an appointment.
Please note that we only accept electronic referrals (eReferrals). This is an electronic referral that is submitted on your behalf by your GP. This replaces paper, faxed and e-mailed referrals.
Once we have received your referral from your GP through our eReferrals system, the nursing and/or medical teams will triage your referral to ensure you will be seen at the appropriate time.
A letter with your appointment date and time will be sent to your postal address. This booking process may take between 7-10 working days to complete.
You will receive an SMS notification (if your GP consents for you to receive these updates in your referral) once the referral has been received, is accepted by our clinic and triaged by our staff.
Please allow 2-3 weeks for your appointment letter to arrive from when your referral has been accepted. Appointment dates can vary from 4 weeks to 5 months following your referral depending on the urgency of your case. If it has been over 3 weeks and you have not received your appointment letter, please call (02) 9382 6240
How long does the appointment take?
The appointment is quick and will usually only take around 5 to 10 minutes.
Please bring:
- Your Medicare card (or Visa and Passport if you are from overseas)
- Any relevant medical results or reports
Can I attend if I have my period?
Yes, you should still attend your appointment if you have your period.
Can I go to work after my appointment?
Yes, you can return to work the same day as the Colposcopy. We can provide you with a medical certificate of attendance for your workplace if needed.
The Colposcopy Service only accepts eReferrals. Please see: https://www.seslhd.health.nsw.gov.au/services-clinics/directory/electro…
HealthLink eReferrals are integrated with multiple software programs, including Medical Director, Best Practice, Genie, Medtech Evolution, Shexie Platinum and Zedmed.
These Smartforms integrate with GP practice systems to streamline the completion and submission of electronic referrals. There is no charge for use of eReferrals.
SmartForms can be launched directly from practice management software.
Referrers who do not have access to these systems can access SmartForms via the HealthLink Portal. A HealthLink account is required.
