Founded in 1962, Friends of Sydney Hospital (FOSH) are a volunteer group who provide service and fundraising assistance to Sydney and Sydney Eye Hospital.
Today, the President, Fay Skuthorpe (OAM), organises over 30 volunteers on weekdays to give their time at the main entrance of the Clinical Services Building to provide sandwiches, snacks, beverages, newspapers and magazines to patients and visitors.
A ward trolley service also provides inpatients with toiletries, snacks and newspapers. The volunteers are continually called upon for directions within the buildings, and it is always a pleasure for FOSH volunteers to help visitors and patients find their destination.
Other volunteer duties include helping in the Sydney and Sydney Eye Hospital Medical Library and acting as tour guides. FOSH volunteers also run the Little Shop, situated in an historical gate house at the Macquarie Street Hospital entrance. This is a charming small boutique of homemade garments, toys, cards, gifts and souvenirs. The Little Shop is open on weekdays from 10.30 am -2.30 pm. (The Little Shop is currently closed due to COVID-19 Red Alert status).
All funds raised by FOSH are donated to Sydney and Sydney Eye Hospital to help purchase patient care equipment.
