Our services are available to all inpatients and outpatients of the hospital across a range of clinical areas:

• Women with poor nutrition intake/malnutrition 
• Women who have had unintentional weight loss
• Women who require tube feeding and/ or intravenous (parenteral) feeding
• Women having gynaecological surgery who are seen prior to and/ or following surgery
• Women with gynaecological cancer/ undergoing cancer treatments, management of treatment related side effects
• Women who are pregnant and/ or have pregnancy related conditions such as gestational diabetes or hyperemesis.

The Dietitians also work closely with the Food Services Department to optimise food service provision to patients and manage any food service issues.
We do not provide outpatient services for any patient not referred through Royal Hospital for Women Health Professionals.

To access our outpatient services, you will need a referral from either your specialist or other Royal Hospital for Women healthcare professional, addressed to the Clinical Dietitians at Royal Hospital for Women.

Your referral letter must explain the reason for referral to dietetics, your medical history, relevant test results, what medicines you are taking and any other dietary specific information.  

After receiving the referral, the Dietitian or an administration officer will contact you to arrange an appointment. We will provide you with the dietetic contact details at the time of booking. If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please contact us directly on the number provided.  

Please advise in your referral letter whether you require an interpreter, as this will need to be arranged when scheduling your appointment.

Your doctor or nurse will refer you to the dietitian during your inpatient stay if it is required. You can also request to see a dietitian if you have any concerns about your nutrition.

Our department runs several clinics to support care needs for outpatients with specific nutrition needs or for follow up after a hospital admission.

Our Outpatient Services

Nutrition Support Clinic

Runs Weekly on a Tuesday afternoon.

Supports patients with poor nutrition status, malnutrition and enteral nutrition (tube feeds).

Osteoarthritis Chronic Care Program

Runs on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Supports patients with osteoparthritis awaiting joint surgery. This service runs in conjunction with physiotherapy and occupational therapy.

General Paediatric Clinic

Runs weekly on a Thursday morning.

Supports paediatric patients with growth concerns, allergies/intolerances, enteral feeding, nutrition deficiencies, fussy eating and obesity.

Renal Clinic

Runs fortnightly on a Monday afternoon.

Supports patients with Chronic Kidney Disease requiring nutrition education or support.

Oncology Day Clinic

The dietitian services the oncology day clinic daily, visiting patients during their treatment.

The dietitian supports patients who have had weight loss or malnutrition requiring nutrition support, tube feeding or assistance with managing symptoms during their treatment.

Once your referral is received, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted to book in an appointment.

If we think your needs are better met by another service we will assist you by coordinating a referral to the appropriate service.

We are located in the Allied Health Outpatient Services on Level 2 of the main hospital building. We are directly next to The Street Canteen Café, and opposite the main hospital lifts.

You can find us via both the southern entry to Level 1 from Kareena Rd (via the lift) or from main hospital entrance facing The Kingsway (Level 2).

You will need your GP (local doctor) or specialist to write you a referral letter to use this service. We provide outpatient appointments for people who live in Randwick, Botany and Waverley and who have any of the medical conditions that are listed above.

Your referral letter must explain your medical history, relevant test results and what medicines you are taking. Please ask your doctor to fax us this referral letter then we will call you to make your first appointment.

Can I choose the day and time I attend for my appointment?

We don’t have clinics or appointments available each day.  Our clinic days and time are limited to just a few set days and times each week.  We will discuss options with you to try and find a time that suits you and your family and carers to attend.

If you need to change or cancel your appointment time, please call us (Ph 9382 2880) and we can cancel your appointment and find a new time for you to attend.

You may need to wait up to 3 months for an appointment to see a dietitian. If your doctor thinks you need an urgent appointment they need to telephone us to discuss your needs.
