Infection Prevention and Control

Effective infection prevention and control practices reduce the risk of transmission of infections between patients, healthcare workers and others in the healthcare environment.

Infections associated with the provision of health care affect patients, consumers, and the health workforce and:

  • Can cause considerable harm and may increase the risk of morbidity, and death
  • Increase the use of health services – for example, extended length of stay, resulting in increased use of health resources such as inpatient beds, treatment options and investigations
  • Place greater demands on the health workforce.

Infection prevention and control within healthcare settings aims to minimise the risk of transmission of infections and the development of antimicrobial resistance. An effective risk management system for infection prevention and control involves the identification of hazards, and assessment and control of risks for patients, visitors, and the health workforce, so far as is reasonably practicable. This approach requires consultation, cooperation and coordination between the health service organisation, patients, consumers and members of the workforce.

Bone Densitometry

Submitted by Louise.Mcdonald on Wed, 13/12/2023 - 12:06

Osteoporosis is a chronic disease that results in bone fragility and low trauma fractures.  It typically affects older persons, with over 70% of fractures occurring in women and men over 70 years of age.  In particular, bone loss is increased in women after the menopause with 2 out of every 3 women affected after the age of 60.

Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is the gold standard imaging used for the diagnosis of osteoporosis.  There are a number of effective treatments available, which can be offered in conjunction with optimising dietary calcium intake, and strength and resistance exercise.

Body composition measurements determine the different tissue proportions of fat, lean muscle and bone in our body.

The Royal Hospital for Women Bone Densitometry Service offers:

  • DXA measurements of spine and proximal femur
  • DXA measurement of other clinical sites (eg radius) if requested or if spine or femur are unable to be imaged
  • Whole body composition
  • Trabecular bone score to assess bone architecture

Clinic Days and Times:

Monday to Friday  - 8am to 4.30pm

Specialist:

Dr. Amanda Beech

The Gynaecological Cancer Centre opened in November 1986 with 7 beds in the gynaecology ward, 2 dedicated oncology nurses and a secretary.

Within 18 months new patient referrals had increased at least four-fold and oncology was requiring an ever increasing number of beds.  With the late Dr. John Greenwell, Medical Superintendent, a proposal was written for a new state-of-the-art Gynaecological Cancer Centre.  Macquarie House was renovated by the Benevolent Society to provide administrative offices, 25 inpatient beds, outpatient and brachytherapy facilities.

This Centre was officially opened by Hon Peter Collins MLA, Minister for Health in March 1990 and  became the benchmark for Gynaecological Oncology units throughout Australia and New Zealand and was replicated at the major Women’s Hospital in Singapore.

Today the Centre has weekly outreach clinics and surgery in Canberra and fortnightly clinics in Wollongong.

The unit treats 350 new invasive cancers per year;  performs 330 major operations per year and undertakes over 1000 cycles of chemotherapy per year.

Clinical research covers surgical management of vulvar, cervical and ovarian cancer, nutrition, lymphoedema and the laboratory is developing a screening test for ovarian cancer.

The current wait for an appointment can vary from 3-9 months depending on the specialty clinic that you are required to attend.

As this is a public clinic you will not be able to choose which consultant you are able to see. Clinic appointments are covered by residents, registrars, fellows and consultants. The consultant will oversee your appointment but you may not be directly seen by them.

We sometimes have requests by patients to be seen by a female doctor. We will endeavour to facilitate this but are unable to guarantee that a female doctor will be available. This may mean additional wait times for your appointment or require your appointment to be rescheduled.

This is a public hospital clinic, if you have a valid GP or specialist referral and Medicare card you will not be billed.

If you do not have a valid Medicare card, you will have to pay a fee. (Please contact hospital cashier reception for a schedule of charges).

If you are from a country which has a Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement, you will not need to pay for your appointment. If this applies, we may ask to see a copy of your visa and passport.

If you are having a procedure for insertion of an Intra Uterine Device (IUD),  the IUD is not included in your visit. You will need to get a prescription from your GP and then purchase your IUD device from your local pharmacist before your appointment. Please ensure you bring the IUD to your procedure.

Clinic appointments can vary between 15 mins- 2 hours dependent on the specialty clinic you are attending.

As this is a public clinic, there may be unavoidable delays and additional waiting times.

  • Medicare card
  • GP or specialist referral letter
  • Any scans or blood tests results
  • Your IUD (if you’re booked for an IUD insertion)

Clinic appointments are covered by both the consultant and a registrar, this is a public clinic and you may see the registrar for your appointment but this will be overseen by your consultant.

As this is a public clinic unfortunately there are sometimes unavoidable delays and there may be wait times as a consequence. We suggest you bring something to occupy yourself whilst waiting.

This is a public hospital clinic and women with a Medicare card will be bulk billed for their clinic appointments.

Chemotherapy at the RHW is ordered in from a specialist chemotherapy pharmacy called Slade . We send your prescription to Slade then they send us the medication/chemotherapy to administer. We then bill Medicare on your behalf. Most drugs are 100% covered by PBS but there are some medications you may need that may have a PBS co-payment (the same as if you took any other script to your own pharmacy). Prior to attending your initial consultation at the FRC we ask all patients to attend your GP to have the following investigations ordered (please refer to https://www.fertilityandresearchcentre.com.au/get-started)

In your initial consultation, you will have the opportunity to speak with fertility consultant and their team and go through your medical history and investigation results. Intending patients and their partners must attend this consultation. Depending on the results of the investigations, the clinician may order additional tests and rebook you for a follow-up appointment. They will also discuss what treatments are available to help you achieve a healthy pregnancy and schedule a follow-up appointment to sign consents for the treatment they recommend. Please arrive on time for your appointment and bring in your Medicare card and photo ID. Our administrative team members will then ensure all your personal details are correct.

Once a referral has been received the FRC will contact you within 2 business days to arrange a consultation and investigations.

Early Pregnancy Clinic:

On arrival to the EPAS the woman and/or partner are initially seen and triaged by a midwife who will take a brief history, retrieve scan and blood test results that have been previously completed, particularly blood group, Full Blood Count and ßhCG (pregnancy hormone). The midwife will also offer information, support and counselling as needed by the woman and their partner.

The woman is then seen by either a Resident (doctor) or Registrar (doctor) attending the clinic. The doctor will take a detailed history, and may perform an abdominal and/or vaginal examination. An ultrasound scan and further blood tests will also be ordered. In some cases a formal scan is ordered in the Ultrasound Department of the RHW. At the end of the visit the patient is informed of the blood and scan results. If the pregnancy is ongoing the women are discharged back to the care of their GP.

Women requiring a surgical procedure are admitted, generally to the Day Surgery Unit or the Gynaecology Ward. For some women further blood tests and/or scans are required before a diagnosis can be made, in which case follow up appointments are made to the Early Pregnancy Assessment Service. Women can expect to be at EPAS for approximately 3-4 hours.
