BreastScreen NSW is a free breast x-ray (mammogram) program to find breast cancer early, before a woman or her doctor notice any symptoms, and is recommended every two years. Early detection of breast cancer increases survival, and treatment is often less invasive than for cancers diagnosed when they are more advanced.
BreastScreen NSW is targeted at women aged 50-74 years where the evidence is that screening has the greatest potential to prevent mortality from breast cancer. Women aged 40-49 and 74 years and older, who have no breast cancer symptoms or signs, are also eligible for free screening mammograms.
The program is aimed at women who do not show signs of having breast cancer. Those with symptoms are encouraged to see their General Practitioner for investigation.
Women whose mammogram shows a possible abnormality are invited to come back for further assessment and tests. The Assessment Clinic is also a free service
