Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

Did you know there is a tablet you can take to reduce your risk of catching HIV?

This medication is called pre-exposure prophylaxis – or PrEP for short.  Prophylaxis means giving treatment to prevent an illness.

Unlike post exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which is taken after a potential exposure to HIV, PrEP is taken on an ongoing basis and it provides protection against HIV.  Studies from around the world have shown that if PrEP is taken correctly it is very effective at preventing HIV.

Whilst PrEP can be prescribed by a GP, many people prefer to come to a specialised clinic like Short Street Centre to access it.

Everyone’s situation is different, but most people at Short Street who take PrEP will have to visit us at least every 3 months for a sexual health screen, blood test and a repeat prescription.

PrEP is subsidised by the PBS, which means that if you have a Medicare card it will only cost you the same as any regular prescription medication.

For clients without Medicare there are other options available, so please speak with your doctor or nurse – or click here: https://www.pan.org.au/
