Addressing Racism in Health Care

South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) is committed to addressing racism.

All forms of racism are harmful, particularly when they occur in health care settings. Racism impacts people’s mental and physical wellbeing and the way they access health services.

The SESLHD Addressing Racism Strategy ‘Racism Harms: Act on It’ is an innovative, evidence-based approach to address racism within health settings. The Strategy is sponsored by the Chief Executive and led by the Equity and Prevention Service in collaboration with the Aboriginal Health Directorate, Population and Community Health and People and Culture.

Activities include leadership and staff forums, bystander intervention training for staff (embedded within corporate orientation), a comprehensive intranet site with resources for staff on how to report and respond to racist incidents and promotional activities such as posters and screensavers.
