Smoking

Smoking is still the leading cause of preventable disease in NSW. 

Smoking causes:

  • respiratory illnesses,
  • cancers, 
  • cardiovascular disease, and 
  • worsens chronic diseases, such as diabetes.

If you need help to quit smoking, there are services and supports you can access.

Quit support services are proven to help people to stop smoking, no matter how long they have been doing it.

 

  • Talk to your GP 
     
  • Call the NSW Quitline 13 7848 (13 QUIT) to speak to a trained Quitline counsellor. This includes counsellors that can speak community languages through the Translating and Interpreting Service. 
     
  • Call the NSW Aboriginal Quitline 13 7848 (13 QUIT) to access Aboriginal counsellors who provide culturally safe and individually tailored counselling support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
     
  • Visit the iCanQuit website for information, resources, tips and tools to help you quit and stay quit.
