From time to time, public health issues arise which may have an actual, or potential, impact on the community. Public health alerts and reports issued by the Public Health Unit may be related to communicable or other infectious diseases, or environmental health risks.

Preliminary findings of public health investigation into cancer concerns at Blakehurst High School

(16 December 2025)

South Eastern Sydney Public Health Unit have investigated concerns raised by members of the Blakehurst High School community about cancer incidence amongst staff. Preliminary findings of the investigation are available here.

In short, the investigation has found no environmental causes of cancer that staff or students would have been exposed to at Blakehurst High School, and analysis of available data found that the number of cancers diagnosed is no more than would be expected in the Australian population.

A final report will be shared in early 2026 which will provide more detailed information about the findings outlined in this preliminary report.

  • Blood borne virus risk for patients of a dental practice in Mortdale: In October, NSW Health issued advice that current and former patients of Mr Safuan Hasic (also known as Steven Hasic), a previous sole dental practitioner based at 70 Victoria Avenue, Mortdale, get tested for blood borne viruses due to infection control breaches identified at his practice.
